Masbro Youth Festival - part of Hammersmith & Fulham Festival

Festival fun came to the Masbro Centre with an outstanding youth tournament and open day as part of Hammersmith & Fulham Festival.

The Youth games tournament attracted immense interest with over 100 young people entering the table tennis and pool competitions and 35 teams competing for the three football tournament prizes under 12’s, 14’s & 16’s. The prizes were well worth winning with iPods, mobile phones, portable DVD players donated by W12 Shopping Centre and Work Directions for the lucky winners.

The finals were watched by the Mayor of Hammersmith & Fulham Cllr Charlie Trellogan who was extremely impressed by the standard of skill shown by the finalists in the pool, table tennis and football competitions. He was not the only one to be impressed - a scout from Fulham Football Club gave Cookie from Lakeside Road W14 a trail on the basis of his football performances in the finals for Masbro Under 12’s..

Winners of the football included Magix(Under 12’s), 7 Feathers(Under 14’s) and a team from the NDC North Fulham Area known as Sweet and Sexy. Their football was anything but as they muscled out 7 Feathers in the Under 16’s finals with a golden goal winning an iPod each for the delighted winners.

It was not just about winning and some of the biggest cheers were for HAFAD a disability youth project football team which put in some creditable performances running the eventual winners close in an eventful group stage game.

Masbro Open Day - part of Hammersmith & Fulham Festival

A huge programme of events were put on from children classes in arts, pottery, samba drumming, face painting and origami to adult classes in yoga, computers, photography, gym work and kick boxing. A mini bazaar and café selling delicious sandwiches, pasta and Caribbean patties did a roaring trade. A complimentary rum punch bar got everyone in the mood for the award winning Quilombo Do Samba gala performance of Brazilian samba dancing at the end of the day.

Over 500 people turned up to the event – many of which had never used the Centre before such as Janet and her daughter Tyler from Sulgrave Road W6 who had an excellent time and plan to use the Centre in the future for pottery courses, the summer playscheme and Carnival. Irene aged 11 from Cathnor Road W12 won the free prize draw a £100 of gift products from L’Oriel making her Mum one of the happiest parents in Hammersmith & Fulham.

Masbro Festival Organiser Martha Romero Zambrano says “ This is the first time we have organised activities at the Masbro Centre for the Hammersmith & Fulham Festival. We have thoroughly enjoyed it.

The youth games tournament was a fantastic occasion and the open day surpassed our expectations attracting new people to our Centre. Our thanks to Hammersmith & Fulham Council for letting us promote and showcase our services. Long may the festival continue.”

Bazaar for Mothers Day

The “Mother of all Bazaars” (H&F Gazette) lived up to its name on the Saturday before Mother’s Day, despite the freezing weather!

Young children enthusiastically made delightful cards for their mums at Jude and Sienna’s workshop, while older people enjoyed creative play at Allegra’s paper workshop. Meanwhile mums and dads shopped in the bazaar, or consulted Luanna and her tarot cards (amazed at her perspicacity!), and then went for a warm-up in Dorothy’s busy café.

Then it was the children’s turn to shop for a gift for mum – perhaps one of the miniature rose plants donated by Wheelers of Turnham Green, or one of Mary’s hand-knitted chick-eggs from the art and craft stall.

A happy sight was children with rainbow faces from the face painters; rolling out their own pastry at Mimma and Julian’s pasta workshop (the Italian way!). Amazement registered as tagliatelle ribbons appeared from the pasta machine.

An astonishing £827 was raised for the befriending project, including £66 for the Tsunami fund. The DVD player raffle prize, donated by Max, was won by Lauren.

The poster competition entries made a colourful display, and it was difficult for the judges to decide on an eye-catching design for next years advertising poster. After much agonizing, prizes were awarded as follows:

4 - 8 category Winner: Mathias age 8
Runner Up: Amisha age 8
Special Prize: Amanti age 6
9 - 12 category Winner: Amelia age 9
Runner Up: Silva Age 11

THANK YOU to all the children who painted or drew pictures for the poster competition.
THANK YOU to all our Masbro friends who donated items for sale.
THANK YOU to the local businesses who donated goods for sale or as prizes: Wheelers; Petit Artisan; Vue Cinemas; Tesco; Safeway.
THANK YOU TO ALL THE PEOPLE WHO VOLUNTEERED THEIR TIME AND (SEEMINGLY BOUNDLESS!) ENERGY TO MAKE THE BAZAAR HAPPEN.
AND THANK YOU TO THE VISITORS WHO CAME TO THE BAZAAR, SPENT MONEY, AND MADE IT SUCH A CHEERFUL COMMUNITY EVENT.
